Walking Weekend in the Yorkshire Dales

Sorry if this is a huge post but I decided the only way I’d get it done was to do it all in one post. What seems like an age ago now, we were invited to a Beer and Food evening at the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, (click here to read about it) I thought it would give us the perfect base for a few days walking and drinking in the North Yorkshire Dales. I’ll upload the routes for the walks soon in case anyone wants to use them. Our first night was spent at the Kings Head in Masham which was close to the brewery, the accommodation was excellent and we were perfectly placed for a short walk round Masham the next day. The plan was to head to the Druids temple and back again, a total of around 10 miles. However not far from the temple we lost the path and...

Things learned on the Coast to Coast

Well it’s been what seems like an age since we completed the Coast to Coast and I’ve just found this post lurking in my drafts folder so thought I’d publish it in case anyone might find it useful. Here are a few things we learned on the walk, some were our own experiences others are from people we met along the way. Book your accommodation well in advance…places en route book up over a year in advance so be warned. The pack horse/sherpa van facility is worth it’s weight in gold especially when the weather is rubbish. If your bags haven’t arrived when you get to your destination it gives you a good excuse for a few beers before they arrive. Don’t upset your Bed and Breakfast owner, a lot of the local business owners know...

Gunnerside 10 Mile Circular Walk (with pubs)

This walk was supposed to be done from Gunnerside, to Reeth taking in the lower path that we decided not to take on our Coast to Coast walk, however we decided we didn’t want to wait for the bus to from Reeth to Gunnerside so drove straight to Gunnerside and thought we would do a circular walk. We nipped into the Kings Head for a pint (the delicious Askrigg Ale) and what turned out to be the biggest sarnie (swaledale cheese and chutney) and most tasty chips we’ve had in a long time…all for a fiver too. PLEASE NOTE THE KINGS HEAD IS NOW CLOSED (12/06/13) so it’s worth detouring to the farmers arms at Muker for refreshment The walk starts directly opposite the pub, by taking the public footpath on the right hand side of the bridge, follow the...

Coast to Coast the Aftermath

Well we’ve been back from our Coast to coast walk for a few days now and we’ve been back at work for a couple of days too. It all seems very strange trying to get back into our daily routine, not getting up and putting our boots on, having our home comforts and driving a car. I’m really missing being outside in the fresh air. We really did have a brilliant time and met some brilliant people, the weather was very kind to us for the most part and the scenery was lovely almost everywhere. I’m in the middle of sorting our photos out and I will upload them to flickr as soon as I get chance, I’ve also got a little post about things we learned during the walk that I hope will help people thinking of doing the walk in the future.

#ourc2c day 13 – Egton Bridge to Robin Hoods Bay

Firstly sorry this is a bit late, I wasn’t in any fit state to write this when we got home, mainly because I had supped quite a lot of IPA in the Wainwright bar in Robin hoods bay, but also because I was buzzing after realising I had just walked from one side of the country to the other. Over the next couple of days I am going to post some summary posts along with a few things we discovered along the way, I will also get round to sorting out the millions of photos i’ve taken and upload them to flickr for you to nosey at if you like. Anyhow, day 13 started with possibly the largest breakfast known to man, I left over half of it and it didn’t look like I had even made a dent in it. We left the Horseshoe at Egton Bridge at around 09:30 with our...
