Hole of Horcum and The Bridestones Walk

This is another one of our “Banker” walks…just like the walk around Roseberry Topping, we use it when we have a few hours to do a few miles but don’t want anything difficult but still want to see a few things along the way. Despite coming 11th in the Rudest place names in Britain it’s relatively quiet apart from summer bank holidays. It’s close to Dalby Forest and there’s also a campsite just along from the car park. Length: 11.3 Miles Time: 3-4.5 hours depending on walking speed/breaks. Start/Finish: Car park at the top of the Hole of Horcum (around £2 for all day parking) Grid reference SE 852 936 Refreshments: Horseshoe Inn Levisham, Cafe/Tea room in Lockton are both on route but there is also the Fox and Rabbit just...

Alnmouth to Craster Walk

We’ve done a fair bit of walking on the stunning Northumberland Coast, this was just a quick one to cover a bit of the coastal path that we hadn’t done and it was the day after we’d been to a wedding so you can imagine why we didn’t want to do anything too strenuous. The whole walk comes in at just under 15 miles, it’s mostly flat but there are a couple of small hills along the way. A lot of the walk is on well trodden paths and the beach. There’s some stunning coastline and a few things to see along the way not to mention 2 pubs, not including the ones in Alnmouth. We were really lucky with the weather, it was really sunny and rather warm…someone forgot to pack the sun cream so one of us may have ended up a little bit...

Roseberry Topping, Captain Cooks Monument and Kildale Walk

This is another one of my favourite walks, it’s only just up the road and has a bit of everything, it even has one of the best tea rooms at the half way point, which not only does excellent scones and toasties but some great bottles of beer too. It works out at about 11 Miles depending which options you take along the route. Even if you don’t use this route you will see that there are loads of paths that you can take so use your imagination to explore some fantastic moorland. I usually find the best place to park is the little car park just outside of Newton Under Roseberry, failing that there is a car park right at the bottom of Roseberry Topping but it’s usually busy. If you’ve parked just outside of the town, head along the roadside...

Blakey Ridge and Rosedale Circuit Walk

The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge, North Yorkshire is one of my favourite places no matter what the weather, it’s always got a great atmosphere and serves great food all day, It also has a decent selection of cask ales to sup after a walk. It’s also a great place for walking with loads of linear and circular routes near by, not to mention it being a stop off on the coast to coast walk. This particular route is one of the walks we do quite a lot, it’s a nice length for a quick afternoon walk at just over 11.6 miles and there’s a little bit of ascent and descent plus a couple of pubs and tea rooms in Rosedale if you fancy a stop. The scenery is also pretty stunning no matter what the weather and we’ve done it in just about every type of...

Whitby to Redcar Walk

I seem to have a huge backlog of blogs for walks we have done over the past few months, including this one which originally started off as Redcar to Whitby as we have done it that way a couple of times, but as we walked it in the opposite direction yesterday I thought I’d post this one before my stuff from the Dales and Northumberland. Traditionally this walk is done from Whitby Whalebones to the Frigate pub in Marske or to the Ship Inn in Saltburn, but to save getting a lift or taxi back to Redcar we usually just walk the extra couple of miles. Much of this coastal path follows the Cleveland Way so it’s really simple to follow and there’s no difficult navigation to worry about. The day started off rather grey and misty but the sun soon came out...

Gunnerside 10 Mile Circular Walk (with pubs)

This walk was supposed to be done from Gunnerside, to Reeth taking in the lower path that we decided not to take on our Coast to Coast walk, however we decided we didn’t want to wait for the bus to from Reeth to Gunnerside so drove straight to Gunnerside and thought we would do a circular walk. We nipped into the Kings Head for a pint (the delicious Askrigg Ale) and what turned out to be the biggest sarnie (swaledale cheese and chutney) and most tasty chips we’ve had in a long time…all for a fiver too. PLEASE NOTE THE KINGS HEAD IS NOW CLOSED (12/06/13) so it’s worth detouring to the farmers arms at Muker for refreshment The walk starts directly opposite the pub, by taking the public footpath on the right hand side of the bridge, follow the...
