Tracklogs mapping software
This is a review I wrote a while back on a well known outdoors forum (and the pics are from the Tracklogs website), to be honest not much has changed apart from a slight increase in price (so i’ve changed those), I still love the software, all It needs now is an IPhone App. It’s another long one so best grab a cuppa or a pint if you are going to read it all. 1) Ordering. This couldnt be easier, log onto their website, select the maps you want from a huge selection, they do all the usual OS Maps and scales along with arial photography and something called site centred mapping which allows you to pay for an area around a particular postcode or location. I went for some of the Standard OS 1:25K maps that came in at £29.95 Each including delivery. I...
Read MoreWalking Weekend In Wales
I was going to do this post in parts but decided I would never get round to doing them all so here’s an account of or Walking weekend in Wales, it’s a bit long so go and grab your self a cuppa and choccy biscuit and settle in. After our beery trip to Chester and a day having a wander round Llangollen, which was a really pretty place and had a couple of great pubs along with an old house, steam railway and horse drawn canal boats, we decided to head off for a couple of days in the tent and to climb a couple of mountains (you can read about the beers here) We called in at Betsw y Coed for a cuppa and a quick look in the shops before heading for Tryfan, a mountain that’s been on my tick list for a very long time, mainly due to the photos of people...

Today saw the arrival of a Therm-a-Rest Pro Lite Plus camping mat from Go Outdoors for test I’ll be completely honest a couple of years ago I wasn’t all that impressed with Go outdoors, their range seemed to be aiming at the bargain basement end of things with a lack of higher end gear and their camping equipment was lacking a few essentials. But i’m more than happy to report the last 18 months has seen them stocking some absolutely fantastic gear, with a great mix of budget gear and top end gear from the likes of Rab, North Face and Montane. All at great prices and in a good range of colours and sizes. One of the things my local store seems to stock a good range of is camping mats everything from foam roll mats that cost a couple of quid all...
Read MoreHole of Horcum and The Bridestones Walk
This is another one of our “Banker” walks…just like the walk around Roseberry Topping, we use it when we have a few hours to do a few miles but don’t want anything difficult but still want to see a few things along the way. Despite coming 11th in the Rudest place names in Britain it’s relatively quiet apart from summer bank holidays. It’s close to Dalby Forest and there’s also a campsite just along from the car park. Length: 11.3 Miles Time: 3-4.5 hours depending on walking speed/breaks. Start/Finish: Car park at the top of the Hole of Horcum (around £2 for all day parking) Grid reference SE 852 936 Refreshments: Horseshoe Inn Levisham, Cafe/Tea room in Lockton are both on route but there is also the Fox and Rabbit just...
Read MoreAlnmouth to Craster Walk
We’ve done a fair bit of walking on the stunning Northumberland Coast, this was just a quick one to cover a bit of the coastal path that we hadn’t done and it was the day after we’d been to a wedding so you can imagine why we didn’t want to do anything too strenuous. The whole walk comes in at just under 15 miles, it’s mostly flat but there are a couple of small hills along the way. A lot of the walk is on well trodden paths and the beach. There’s some stunning coastline and a few things to see along the way not to mention 2 pubs, not including the ones in Alnmouth. We were really lucky with the weather, it was really sunny and rather warm…someone forgot to pack the sun cream so one of us may have ended up a little bit...
Read MoreRoseberry Topping, Captain Cooks Monument and Kildale Walk
This is another one of my favourite walks, it’s only just up the road and has a bit of everything, it even has one of the best tea rooms at the half way point, which not only does excellent scones and toasties but some great bottles of beer too. It works out at about 11 Miles depending which options you take along the route. Even if you don’t use this route you will see that there are loads of paths that you can take so use your imagination to explore some fantastic moorland. I usually find the best place to park is the little car park just outside of Newton Under Roseberry, failing that there is a car park right at the bottom of Roseberry Topping but it’s usually busy. If you’ve parked just outside of the town, head along the roadside...
Read MoreBlakey Ridge and Rosedale Circuit Walk
The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge, North Yorkshire is one of my favourite places no matter what the weather, it’s always got a great atmosphere and serves great food all day, It also has a decent selection of cask ales to sup after a walk. It’s also a great place for walking with loads of linear and circular routes near by, not to mention it being a stop off on the coast to coast walk. This particular route is one of the walks we do quite a lot, it’s a nice length for a quick afternoon walk at just over 11.6 miles and there’s a little bit of ascent and descent plus a couple of pubs and tea rooms in Rosedale if you fancy a stop. The scenery is also pretty stunning no matter what the weather and we’ve done it in just about every type of...
